What Is FreeCell?

FreeCell is a popular solo card game in the Solitaire family. In the FreeCell card game, all 52 cards are dealt face-up into eight columns (the FreeCell tableau). Your goal is to move all the cards to four foundation piles, building each pile in ascending order from Ace to King in the same suit.

To help you plan your strategy, you can use four temporary “free cells” to hold cards and rearrange sequences.

How to Play FreeCell

  • Cards are dealt into eight tableau columns:
  • • Four columns have 7 cards each
  • • Four columns have 6 cards each
  • You can move any face-up card (with no cards on top) to:
  • • Another tableau column (must be placed on a card of the opposite color and one rank higher)
  • • An empty free cell (up to 4 available)
  • • A foundation pile, starting with the Aces and building up in the same suit
  • The number of cards you can move at once depends on how many free cells and empty tableau columns are available:
  • • 4 open = move 5 cards
  • • 3 open = move 4 cards
  • • 2 open = move 3 cards
  • • 1 open = move 2 cards
  • • 0 open = move 1 card
  • An empty tableau column can hold any card or movable sequence.

FreeCell Solitaire Strategy Tips

  • All cards are visible from the beginning—use this to plan several moves.
  • Avoid filling free cells too early, or you’ll lose mobility.
  • Move Aces and low cards to the foundation piles as early as possible.
  • Create empty tableau columns strategically—they increase how many cards you can shift.
  • Use empty columns to temporarily hold cards and re-sequence long stacks.

FreeCell Variants and Difficulty

There are many FreeCell variants, such as Baker’s Game, Eight Off, and Seahaven Towers. These versions include slight rule changes but still use a single deck. The classic FreeCell Single Player game is mostly skill-based, unlike luck-based Solitaire games.

Interestingly, almost every FreeCell deal is solvable. Out of over 1.9 million possible deals, only one (Game #11982) has been proven unsolvable.

Why Play FreeCell?

Playing FreeCell Solitaire Classic helps improve focus, critical thinking, and memory. Studies even suggest it may help detect cognitive changes over time. It’s a great way to unwind while giving your brain a gentle challenge.
